Fish can be defenseless in oceans, lakes, rivers, and certain underground locations. Most fish can be caught with a fishing pole. The others require crab pots to catch. Some fish spawn only at certain times of the day, during sure seasons, or during certain weather. Upon catching a fish, the proper name of the fish and its length are displayed. Players can proceed track of how many fish they've caught and their record lengths in their Collections menu. Fish can be used as ingredients in cooking and are required to restore the Fish Tank in the Community Center.
While players can fish near whatsoever trunk of water, some places have lower rates of success. These areas are more than likely to produce trash, most of which tin can be turned into useful items using the Recycling Machine which unlocks at fishing level iv.
All fish can be caught regardless of weather, fourth dimension, or season using Magic Bait.
Angling Mini-Game
Whenever a fish is hooked, a minigame which allows the actor to grab it is triggered. In this minigame, a fish-like icon moves upward and down within a vertical space. The histrion controls a green bar, which ascends while the left mouse button is pressed and drops while it's non. The green bar bounces when information technology reaches the bottom boundary of the minigame unless a Lead Bobber is equipped.
A take hold of meter increases while the fish is kept inside the green area and decreases while it'southward not. Once the catch meter is fulfilled, the fish is caught. The fish escapes if the meter becomes empty.
If the role player catches a fish without letting it slip out the green area once, the take hold of is considered "perfect", and that word is displayed above the minigame. Perfection increases the fish quality provided the fish was at to the lowest degree silver quality initially: argent quality fish become gold quality and gilt quality fish become iridium quality. It also increase fishing experience by a multiplicative cistron of 2.four.
It'southward only possible to know what fish is hooked after information technology'southward defenseless, every bit the minigame shows no data about the specimen. The histrion tin can, all the same, deduce it by observing its behavior and knowing the circumstances under which the fish was hooked, such every bit season, time, weather, and location. The only exception is with legendary fish, which can be seen wearing an orangish crown in the line-fishing minigame.
Upon catching a fish, the name of the fish and its size are displayed. If the actor got a new record length for the fish, an blitheness saying "New record!" is shown. Upon catching a legendary fish, a message maxim "Y'all've caught one of the legendary fish." is shown.
Beliefs
There are 5 types of behavior that fish tin can take in the mini-game:
- Mixed: These fish use the bones movement blueprint.
- Smooth: These fish have a more steady movement design.
- Sinker: These fish accept a faster downwards acceleration.
- Floater: These fish have a faster up dispatch.
- Dart: These fish move more than random with a [2 x difficulty]% higher possible amplitude in both directions, moving erratically upwardly and down the line-fishing bar.

The Lost Book named Secrets of the Legendary Fish contains the seasons and locations of the legendary fish.
The high difficulty of these fish makes communicable them challenging. Higher angling skills than required just to hook the fish may be necessary, especially from nutrient bonuses (e.g., from Seafoam Pudding). Having the Iridium Rod and using a Tackle such as the Trap Bobber or Cork Bobber can besides help. Ultimately, catching these fish can depend more on luck than on good reactions. Just try again and again until the fish doesn't move likewise fiercely.
It is impossible to catch these fish while Mr. Qi's Extended Family unit quest is active; the corresponding Legendary Fish II fish volition exist caught instead.

Crab Pot Fish
Fish caught in crab pots are always normal quality are worth 5 fishing XP. But foraged fish tin be of normal, argent, aureate, or iridium quality and are affected by the Botanist profession bonus. Some are simply catchable using a baited Crab Pot.
All of these creatures tin can be used as components in the Crab Pot package. Crabs driblet from Rock Crabs (15%) and Lava Crabs (25%); Clams, Cockles, Mussels, and Oysters can be foraged on the Beach. Betwixt beach foraging and Stone/Lava Crab loot it is possible to complete the Crab Pot packet without the apply of a crab pot. Baiting the rewarded crab pots, however, is only possible past reaching fishing level 2, viewing Linus' 4-Middle cutscene, or acquiring allurement randomly from a Line-fishing Treasure Breast.
Items gathered via foraging or from monster drops will not count towards the Fish drove nor assigned a take hold of length. They must be defenseless using a Crab Pot to count. Cockles, Oysters, and Mussels caught using a fishing pole on the Beach Farm will also count towards the drove.
While none of these items can exist eaten directly, all crab pot fish tin can exist used in cooking recipes that require a "fish" and some accept specific recipes of their ain. Most catch of normal quality except Crab, Lobster, and Crayfish is worth less than data-sort-value="75"> 75g, making it more than assisting to turn them into Sashimi rather than to sell these items. (This changes with the Fisher and Angler professions and the quality of foraged items.)[1]

Other Catchables
There are some not-junk items players can reel in while fishing. They do not trigger the fishing mini-game but are instead immediately picked upwardly. Each gives 3 fishing XP when caught and is always standard quality.
All three are displayed in the Fish section of the collection tab and count towards the four fishing achievements.[3] However, they are non otherwise considered to be a fish, and therefore cannot be sold to Willy at the Fish Shop nor used in place of "Any Fish" in recipes.

- ↑ Crab pot contents are determined by CrabPot::DayUpdate. For mariners, there is no run a risk of junk, and all creatures are as probable. For non-mariners, there is a 20% chance of junk, then each beast is checked sequentially using the chances specified in Fish.xnb. One result of this algorithm is that the actual gamble of finding a given fauna is smaller than the value in the input file, because it tin merely be found if junk items and all previous creatures failed their tests.
- ↑ Clams are not categorized every bit Fish by the game. Therefore they cannot be used in Fish recipes, do not do good from Line-fishing price bonuses, do not show upwardly in the Fish department of the collection tab, and do not count towards the four fishing Achievements.
- ↑ In the game data (ObjectInformation.xnb) the type assigned to Seaweed and Algae is "Fish", only it is not assigned the Fish category (-4). The label displayed in-game and almost uses are controlled by the category.
